Volleyball Splits Day Two at Onset Invitational

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Southeastern University volleyball split the final day of the Onset Invitational in Fort Wayne, Ind., falling to Grace College in four sets before closing out the invitational with a four-set victory over the Saint Francis (Ind.).

SEU (1) vs. Grace (3)

  • 25-14, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18

The Fire opened the day against Grace and dropped the first set before answering with a 25-22 win in the second-set to even the match. Southeastern stayed within striking distance throughout the third, pulling within one late, but Grace held on before closing out the match in the fourth.

Laura Bonomi led the Fire offense with 16 kills and added 21 digs, while Mallori Grey paced Southeastern defensively with 24 digs. Haven Speer finished with a team-high 24 assists.

SEU (3) vs. St. Francis (1)

  • 16-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21

After a tough first set, Southeastern responded with a come-from-behind win in the second set against Saint Francis. It was all Fire from then on out, taking the third, carrying that momentum and securing a four set win over the Cougars.

A lengthy Southeastern run proved decisive in the fourth. With Saint Francis holding an early advantage, the Fire surged ahead behind strong serving from Bonomi, as she rattled off nine straight to put the Fire ahead 13-5. Southeastern held off a late Cougar push to secure the 3-1 victory and improve to 5-3 on the season.
Jillian Zoerman led Southeastern with 12 kills, Grey recorded a team-high 21 digs, and Speer led the Fire with 18 assists.

The Fire head to Florida Memorial on September 5, at 2 p.m. in Miami Gardens.
