LAKELAND, Fla. -- No. 4 Fire Women's Tennis clinched the Sun Conference Tournament One-Seed for the first time in program history this afternoon, blanking No. 22 College of Coastal Georgia, 4-0 on the Lakeland Beerman Family Tennis Complex.
The doubles point was handled quickly by Southeastern, Martina Picardi and Alessia Ciampi kicking things off with quick a 6-0 win over Karlie Scott Kersey and Gabriella Rodrigues on flight one.
Isabella Bolivar Garces and Irene Parigi followed soon after with a 6-2 victory over Luna Feillon and Gabriela Miteva on the second flight to clinch the point.
Flight three went unfinished, but was within the Fire's control as Leonie Schondelmaier and Aurora Compagnucci commanded a 5-3 lead.
After that, it was all business, Ciampi exited the courts first, controlling a 6-0, 6-0 win over Felicia Elixmann on line four. No. 27 Picardi came right after with a ranked 6-1, 6-1 victory over No. 73 Feillon on line two, handing the Fire match point.
Bolivar Garces finished the job on the top court, defeating Miteva 6-4, 6-2. Advancing the Fire to 12-4, and 6-0 in the Sun Conference.
Three matches went unfinished, and they all featured the Fire a set in front. Schondelmaier held a 6-2, 5-2 lead on line three, No. 63 Parigi was in control on line five 6-1, 4-1, and Compagnucci led on line six 6-3, 3-1.
All eyes turn to tomorrow all important showdown with No. 7 SCAD-Savannah, as the Fire seek the outright Sun Conference title at 1 p.m.
