LAKELAND, Fla. -- No. 4 Southeastern advanced to 4-2 this afternoon, dominating the bottom lines en route to a 5-2 victory over NCAA DII Walsh University.
Doubles kicked off in the Fire's favor, despite a hiccup at flight two.
Martina Picardi and
Alessia Ciampi jumpstarted SEU with a 6-2 win on flight one, and
Leonie Schondelmaier and
Aurora Compagnucci finished the deal with a 6-3 victory on flight three.
The Cavaliers cruised to a 6-2 flight two victory, with Lina Starke and Aleksandra Chmir defeating
Isabella Bolivar Garces and
Irene Parigi.
With the doubles point secured, it did not take long for the Fire to claim the match. Schondelmaier started the climb to victory, advancing to 4-1 on the season with a 6-0, 6-1 line three win over Chmir.
The score now 2-0, her doubles teammate, Compagnucci, claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win over Liv-Grete Laarmann. Parigi avenged her doubles loss, coasting to a 6-1, 6-2 victory on line five.
With the match clinched, Ciampi notched the the Fire's final point, winning 6-2, 6-2 on line three.
Walsh's two team points came on the top two lines, with Starke fending off Garces 7-5, 6-2, and Taira Abildayeva edging out a 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 10-5 win over
Martina Picardi on line two.
The Fire will look to build on the momentum on Thursday, heading to Orlando, Fla. at the USTA Tennis Complex to take on Judson University at 6 p.m.
