LAKELAND, Fla. -- Southeastern Men's Basketball opens postseason play Tuesday night as the No. 3 seed in the Sun Conference Tournament, hosting No. 6 seed Webber International at 7 p.m. inside The Furnace. The Fire enter the opening round at 23-5 overall and 12-4 in conference action, positioning themselves for a March run.
SEU has been one of the most efficient offensive teams in the conference all season, averaging 85.9 points per game while shooting 50.1 percent from the field. The Fire also hold a +10.4 scoring margin and average 38.5 rebounds per contest, outrebounding opponents by eight per game. That balance between scoring efficiency and physical play inside has been a consistent theme throughout the year.
Mylo Santos leads the Fire at 17.9 points per game and has served as a steady presence on both ends, adding 70 assists and 49 steals.
Daivion Traylor anchors the interior, averaging 14.8 points while shooting 73.7 percent from the floor.
Jayson Nixon provides perimeter spacing with 72 made three-pointers at a 41.6 percent clip, while
Nathan Mikkelson contributes 11.2 points and a team-best 8.0 rebounds per game. Together, the group has helped Southeastern average more than 15 assists per outing and shoot 34.8 percent from beyond the arc.
The Fire swept the regular-season series against Webber, winning 84-57 in Babson Park on Jan. 3 and 86-68 in Lakeland on Jan. 31. In both games, Southeastern controlled the paint and limited Webber's second-chance opportunities, building separation in the second half.
Webber enters the tournament at 10-18 overall and 5-11 in conference play. The Warriors average 71.2 points per game while allowing 79.6 and shoot 42.8 percent from the field. They rely heavily on guard play and perimeter shooting, averaging 8.2 made three-pointers per contest.
Landon Tillman leads WIU at 14.4 points per game and is a primary ball handler. Deon Brown (12.5 ppg) and Nirobi Peeler Jr. (11.6 ppg) provide scoring punch from the outside, with Peeler shooting better than 45 percent from three-point range overall. Thomas Morgan adds balance inside, averaging 9.8 points and a team-best 7.4 rebounds per game.
While Webber's overall numbers show a negative scoring margin and rebounding deficit, the Warriors have proven capable of competing in close games. They have picked up conference wins over St. Thomas, Warner, Coastal Georgia, and most recently Coastal Georgia again in February. Their ability to space the floor and create off the dribble will be a focal point for Southeastern's defensive rotations.
Historically, the matchup favors the Fire. Southeastern leads the all-time series 26-10 and has won 10 consecutive meetings. SEU is 15-4 against Webber at home and has won both previous postseason matchups between the programs.
With the opening round hosted on campus sites, protecting home court will be critical. Southeastern finished 10-2 inside The Furnace this season and has played with consistent tempo and physicality on its home floor.
The winner of Tuesday's matchup advances to West Palm Beach for the semifinal round at Keiser on Friday, February 27. The SEU/Webber winner will face Ave Maria at 4 p.m., with a berth in the conference championship game on the line.
