Semifinal Runs Push Fire Into Day One Tie

SEU advances three to the semifinals and remain tied for the team lead entering Saturday

MARSHALL, Mo. -- No. 3 Southeastern delivered a strong and balanced performance Friday at the Missouri Valley Invitational, closing Day One tied for first place in the team standings with host Missouri Valley at 83 points. Competing in one of the deepest fields of the season, the Fire combined championship-round success with steady production in the consolation brackets, positioning themselves firmly in the team title race heading into Saturday's final day.

The Fire advanced three wrestlers to the semifinals, setting the tone early in the tournament. At 125 pounds, Jake Bucci turned in one of the day's most impressive runs, opening with a technical fall before defeating two ranked opponents in succession. Bucci earned a disciplined 5–0 decision over No. 7 Saoul Prado of Baker, then followed with a clutch sudden-victory win over No. 11 Kobi Johnson of Providence to secure his place in the semifinals. His ability to control matches against nationally ranked competition provided an early boost to Southeastern's team total.

At 174 pounds, Ty Rodriguez added another semifinal appearance after a dominant opening day that showcased both scoring ability and mat control. Rodriguez recorded a technical fall and three decisive victories, highlighted by a 9–4 win over No. 21 Orion Thivierge of MSU-Northern. His consistent scoring throughout the day kept Southeastern in the thick of the team race as the brackets narrowed.

Southeastern's third semifinalist came at 197 pounds, where No. 7 Kasten Grape continued his impressive season with a bonus-point-heavy performance. Grape opened the tournament with a technical fall and a pin, added another technical fall, and closed the day with a convincing 7–0 decision over No. 18 Logan Davidson of Friends. His efficiency and ability to generate bonus points proved especially valuable in a tightly contested team standings.

Depth across the lineup played a major role in Southeastern's Day One success, particularly in the consolation rounds. Heavyweight Bryce Wheatley responded to an early setback with a strong bounce-back effort, stringing together multiple wins that included a significant 7–2 decision over No. 6 Nicolas Rodriguez of Eastern Oregon, one of the most notable individual wins of the day. At 157 pounds, Ryan Bennett put together a productive opening day that featured a major decision, a technical fall, and several controlled victories to remain alive entering Saturday.

Additional contributions came from throughout the roster as Southeastern continued to add points in every session. No. 10 Husam Mustafa at 174 pounds opened the tournament with a pin and added bonus points before moving into the consolation bracket, while No. 16 Jonathan Vanderbilt at 184 pounds recorded multiple falls and stayed in position to contend for placement points. Joey Hutchins, Jaxon Mackey, Raymond Cavey, Austin Scott, and Tyler Hanna each collected key wins that helped sustain Southeastern's presence across both sides of the bracket and maintain pressure on the teams at the top of the standings.

By the end of Friday's action, Southeastern had matched Missouri Valley point for point at the top of the leaderboard, finishing ahead of several nationally ranked programs in a tightly packed field. With three semifinalists still alive and a deep group of wrestlers positioned to score placement points, the Fire carried momentum and opportunity into Saturday's championship rounds.
