No. 25 Fire Carry Momentum Into Key Sun Conference Matchups

SEU visits Ave Maria before returning to The Furnace to host Florida Memorial this week

LAKELAND, Fla. -- No. 25 Southeastern Women's Basketball continues Sun Conference play this week with a two-game slate, opening on the road before returning to Lakeland. The Fire travel to Ave Maria on Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. matchup, then return home to The Furnace on Saturday to host Florida Memorial at 2 p.m.

Both games will be streamed live on the Urban Edge Network. Fans can watch via the Urban Edge Network App on Smart TVs and mobile devices or stream online through Urban Edge Network's digital platform.

Southeastern enters the week with a 16-3 overall record and a 6-1 mark in conference play. The Fire have won two straight games and continue to be dominant at home with an 11-1 record in The Furnace. SEU has also proven capable away from Lakeland, posting a 3-1 road record, while going 2-1 in neutral-site contests this season.

The Fire rank among the NAIA's elite on both ends of the floor. Southeastern averages 79.5 points per game while allowing just 55.1, good for a scoring margin of +24.4. SEU leads the NAIA in three-point field goal percentage (.392) and ranks fifth in overall field goal percentage (.479). The Fire also rank seventh in free throw percentage (.769), ninth in assists per game (18.2), and top 15 nationally in scoring offense.

Defensively, Southeastern forces 21.7 turnovers per game and averages 11.6 steals per contest, showcasing an aggressive, disruptive style.

SEU has been one of the most efficient shooting teams in the country, knocking down 40 percent or better from three-point range 12 times this season and shooting 50 percent or better from the field in seven games. The Fire have also been exceptional at the free-throw line. SEU recently set a school record by going a perfect 20-for-20 against Warner and enters the week having made 28 consecutive free throws over its last three games.

In addition to its shooting efficiency, Southeastern has consistently controlled the flow of games. The Fire have led wire-to-wire in eight contests this season and, in three other games, trailed for less than two total minutes from start to finish.

Mya Herman has been the engine of Southeastern's offense and one of the most efficient scorers in the Sun Conference. The junior guard ranks second in the league at 17.7 points per game and leads the conference in three-point field goal percentage at 46.2 percent. Herman's ability to score at all three levels while stretching defenses from deep has been central to SEU's nation-leading perimeter efficiency.

Grace Field provides Southeastern with a dominant inside presence, ranking fourth in the Sun Conference at 14.9 points per game while sitting second league-wide in rebounding at 9.5 boards per contest. Field's efficiency around the rim and physicality on the glass give the Fire consistent interior balance to complement their perimeter shooting.

Alley Haas has emerged as one of the most dangerous shooters in the conference, ranking second in the Sun Conference in three-point percentage at 46.1 percent. Her floor spacing creates driving lanes and forces defenses to extend, playing a key role in Southeastern's top-ranked three-point shooting nationally.

Sarah Davis adds another perimeter weapon, ranking third in the Sun Conference in three-point percentage at 39.1 percent. Davis provides instant offense and has been especially reliable in pressure situations, including perfect free-throw shooting in conference play.

Mafalda Chambel directs the Fire offense and ranks tied for the Sun Conference lead with 4.5 assists per game. Her ability to control tempo, distribute effectively, and apply defensive pressure at the point of attack helps Southeastern maintain its aggressive, fast-paced style on both ends of the floor.

Ave Maria enters the matchup with a 7–6 overall record and a 4–3 mark in Sun Conference play, having been especially effective away from home with a 5–3 road record. The Gyrenes average 60.8 points per game and are led by Ashley Chilson, who ranks among the conference leaders with 16.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest, while Gabby Beauperthuy adds 12.7 points and 8.5 boards to provide a strong interior presence.

The series between Southeastern and Ave Maria dates back to 2008 and has favored the Fire. SEU holds a 25–14 advantage in the all-time series and has won eight of the last 10 meetings. Southeastern has also claimed each of the last two matchups, including a 76–48 road victory on February 22, 2025.

Florida Memorial brings an 8–6 overall record and a 4–4 Sun Conference mark into the week, with much of its success coming on the road where the Lions are 3–1 this season. FMU averages 64.7 points per game and is led by Sun Conference scoring leader Kalea Rainey at 18.4 points per contest, using aggressive guard play and consistent pressure to generate offense.

Southeastern and Florida Memorial first met in 2005, with the Fire holding a narrow edge in the all-time series. SEU leads the series 26–12 overall and has won four of the last six meetings, including a decisive 91–52 road victory earlier this season.

Looking ahead, SEU will continue conference play next week with another challenging slate. The Fire travel to Brunswick, Ga., on Wednesday, January 28, for a 5:30 p.m. matchup at Coastal Georgia, before returning to The Furnace on Saturday, January 31, to host Webber International at 5 p.m. as the Sun Conference race moves deeper into its critical stretch.
