Men’s Tennis Blanks Coastal Georgia, Stays Perfect on Season

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – The Fire kept their flawless spring rolling on Friday afternoon. Southeastern University's men's tennis team earned its 10th shutout of the season with a dominant 5-0 victory over the College of Coastal Georgia.

SEU (14-0) wasted no time dispatching the Mariners, sweeping doubles before quickly clinching the match in singles. The Fire have now recorded four straight shutouts and continue to assert themselves as one of the top teams in the NAIA.

Alejandro Orihuela and Mark Griffin provided the match-ending points, each finishing their singles wins nearly simultaneously. Orihuela took down Leonardo Marin at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2, while Griffin defeated Luis Solarzano 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot.

The pair also teamed up in doubles, earning a 6-1 victory at the No. 3 position over Caspar Grylls and Valentim Buerger. Piero Fernandez and Diego Menendez followed suit with a 6-2 win at the top spot over Marin and Pierre-Emmanuel Kass.

In singles, Fernandez made quick work of Kirmayr at the No. 2 position, earning a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win. Javier Gallego added a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kass at No. 3 singles to help push SEU to the brink of victory before Orihuela and Griffin closed it out.

Several matches went unfinished but favored SEU. Gonzalo Fernandez and Gallego held a 5-3 lead at No. 2 doubles when the match was halted. Menendez led 6-0, 3-4 in top singles against Leonardo Ciriaci, while Gonzalo Fernandez was ahead 6-0, 4-2 at No. 5 singles against Gonzalo Tano.

The Fire return to action Saturday, April 12, in a showdown at No. 10 SCAD-Savannah. First serve is set for noon.
