LAKELAND, Fla. – The Fire recorded a key Sun Conference win Wednesday evening. Southeastern University gained second-quarter separation and never looked back in earning their 20th win of the year in an 81-66 Sun Conference women's basketball victory over St. Thomas University.
After the Bobcats put up six points in a row midway through the second period, the Fire answered with a 13-4 surge over the final four minutes for a 34-23 intermission advantage. Mya Herman popped the opening jumper of the second half and started a second Fire run of 13-5 in the first four third quarter minutes for a 47-28 lead. The Bobcats would get no closer than 12 points over the final 16 minutes of play.
With the victory, SEU completed the season sweep and improved their record to 20-4. The Fire claimed the first meeting by a 76-64 score on November 23. SEU has now won three in a row against St. Thomas (15-7). The Fire remain tied for first place in Sun Conference with Floirda Memorial, with both teams 10-2 in conference play.
Jodi Mullins connected on 7-of-14 shots, including a 3-pointer, for 22 points and two assists to pace the Fire. Herman also had an effective night at 7-for-10 and drained 4-of-6 from beyond the arc for 18 points and added three steals.
Off the bench, Courtni Demorest contributed 14 points and three rebounds as the other double-digit player. Coleman added an all-around night of nine points, six boards, three assists and three steals. Grace Field chipped in six points, seven rebounds, five steals and a trio of assists.
Kassidy Jones made both her shot attempts with one being a 3-pointer for five points, while Alley Haas hit a 3-pointer. Rosa Sorribes and Victoria McKnight had two points and Ariana Smude swatted three shots and had two rebounds.
Maddie Scharrenberg led the St. Thomas effort with 16 points.
The Fire return to action on Saturday, when they travel to Keiser University to take on the Seahawks. Tip off is at 2 p.m..
