Wissinger Fires One-Hitter, Fire Roll

LAKELAND, Fla. – Dominance on the mound continued for the Fire on Wednesday night. Reece Wissinger fired a one-hit complete-game shutout as Southeastern University beat No. 24 University of British Columbia, 12-0, on Wednesday night at Ted A. Broer Stadium.

After not allowing a hit over the first six frames of work, Wissinger allowed a lead-off single in the top of the seventh, but retired the ensuing three Thunderbirds, ending the game. The Fire gave Wissinger plenty of run support with five runs in the third and another seven in the fourth with Myles White belting a solo home run to aid the effort.

With the win, SEU improves to 5-0 on the season and earn their second win over British Columbia (1-4). The Fire have outscored their opponents by a 45-4 margin in those five wins.

Wissinger fanned 11 batters. In his first two starts of 2025, he has logged 14 innings of work, allowing no runs, four hits, four walks, and has struck out 18.  In his first start the Fire beat Arizona Christian, 7-0.

White hit a one-out home run in the home fourth and scored two runs, giving him an RBI, and walked twice.

SEU received multiple hits from Alfonso Villalobos, Peter Tassler, Connor Hicks and Sean Kaelber, who combined for nine of the Fire's 13 hits on the night. Villalobos registered a 3-for-5 game with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Tassler doubled and singled with two RBI, Hicks singled twice with a RBI, and Kaelber added two singles with two runs and an RBI.

Nick Streuer and Charlie Collins doubled and combined for two runs and three RBI. Jon Paul Pennella rounded out the hits with a single, a run, and two walks. John Rossi pinch ran and scored two times.

Following Wissinger striking out two of the three in the top of the third, the Fire went to work in the home half. After Hicks reached on an error, Tassler doubled him home for the game's first run. White walked and Villalobos singled before two touched home off a second British Columbia miscue. Collins finished the five-run frame with a two-run double down the left field line.

After another one-two-three top of the fourth, SEU broke the game even further open. Myles hit the lone home run of the game for the first run. Villalobos doubled and scored on Kaelber's single to right center. Collins singled in another tally and Tassler sliced a two-run double, capping off the seven-run frame and 12-0 lead.

SEU and British Columbia completes their two-game set tomorrow night in another 6 p.m. start in Lakeland.
