Fire Defense Stifles Warriors

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Fire wasted no time in taking control, racing out to a 13-2 lead in the opening five minutes and letting their defense take care of the rest, as they beat Webber International University, 82-50, in Sun Conference women's basketball action this evening.

After putting up the game's first five points, Mya Herman connected on three-straight field goals and helped SEU run out to a 13-2 advantage. The Warriors gained their footing and got within two, 13-11, but the Fire went on an 8-0 run then hit five second quarter treys for a 41-25 halftime lead. Following an opening Alley Haas triple to start the third quarter, Jodi Mullins made back-to-back layups and SEU never looked back.

SEU (13-3) claimed their fourth win in a row and seventh in eight contests as they improved to 3-1 in Sun Conference play. Webber International dropped to 4-7 (1-2 Sun Conference).

The Fire defense forced the Warriors into 25 turnovers and the bench doubled Webber's production, 26-13.

Herman led four SEU starters in double figures with 16 points on 6-of-11 attempts, including two treys, to go with eight steals, four rebounds and three assists. Mullins was right behind with 15 points as she hit all three of her 3-pointers and handed out four assists.

Grace Field had an all-around night with 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, four steals and a pair of blocked shots. Anaya Coleman completed the double-figure starters with 10 tallies as she pulled eight boards and dished three assists.

Rosa Sorribes led the home bench effort with 10 points, including two treys, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Courtni Demorest added nine points, three boards, two assists and two steals, while Kassidy Jones chipped in seven points, three rebounds and three steals.

Jaiden Ross' double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds led the Warriors' effort.

The Fire return to action on Wednesday when they host Keiser University. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m..
