MARIETTA, Ga. – Aaron Lucio and Andrew Voiles provided the Southeastern University wrestling highlights and gave the Fire the early lead, but No. 2 Life University secured the dual match victory, 37-9.
At 133, Lucio produced a big Fire victory. He took down Peyton Hoskins three times in the opening period and established a comfortable 9-2 lead. Following a Hoskins escape to start the second frame, Lucio took him down and earned the fall in 3:40 to give SEU a 6-4 lead.
Running on the Lucio momentum, Voiles followed with the second Fire win in three bouts. The 141-pounder wrestled up a weight class, battling back against Kaden Ramos. The SEU grappler started with a takedown and 3-0 lead before Ramos escaped and proceeded with his own takedown for a 4-3 edge. The Life wrestler added two points in the second and led 6-3. In the final 2-minute period, Voiles made his move with an immediate escape and completed a takedown for a 7-6 lead. Ramos deadlocked the match again, 7-7, before Voiles took him down again and received the riding time bonus point for an 11-7 decision.
Trailing 9-4, the host Eagles did not give the visitors another victory by taking the final seven weight classes, including two falls at 149 and 184 along with a six-point forfeit in the 174 spot.
SEU saw Michael Shannon and Noah Winder hold tough in close decision defeats at 157 (4-1) and 285 (5-2).
SEU travels to Brewton-Parker College tomorrow for a 2 p.m. dual match.
