Women’s Soccer Battles to a Draw

Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. – Despite controlling the action for the majority of the afternoon, the Fire settled for a 1-1 tie against No. 14 Truett-McConnell University in a hot and humid home opener.

Truett-McConnell took the lead off a penalty-kick from Ashley Johnson at the 8:32 mark in the first half. After peppering 14 shots toward the visitors' net over the opening 45 minutes, Rebecca Laface and Madelyn Davidson teamed up to assist Katie Carnes on the game-tying goal at 63:49. The Fire (1-0-1) controlled the action in the final 26 minutes of the game by holding the Bears to a single shot, but they could not find the back of the net and the win.

Carnes and her teammates out-shot Truett-McConnell by a 19-5 margin for the game. SEU also finished with a 10-3 corner kick advantage.

Goalie Madison Songer saved one of the two shots on goal she faced in 90 minutes as the SEU defense kept the ball out of the home end of the field.

The Fire hit the road for a tough match-up against No. 4 University of Tennessee Southern on Friday, September 6. The action is scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. EDT.
