LAKELAND, Fla.—Three unearned runs helped Calumet beat Southeastern in the first game of the day before the Fire came back with a 14-0 win over the Crimson Wave in five innings to conclude the six-game spring break slate with a 5-1 record.
A two-out error scored a run in the top of the first, followed by back-to-back walks gave Calumet a 2-0 lead after a half inning of play.
Southeastern only had two base runners through the first three innings on a walk and a hit by pitch. In the fourth, the Fire started to get the offense going with a lead off single to right by
Lauren Sekinger who came around to score on a bases-loaded hit by pitch to
Nicole Wasserstrom. With the bases loaded and nobody out, a fielder's choice along with an unconventional double play off a dropped line drive at third base kept the Fire to just one run in the inning.
The Fire tied it on a
Leah Gonzalez single to right to score
Hailey Brooks who led off the inning with a single to left.
In the seventh, Calumet had a runner on second and got a single to center field. The batter advanced to second on a throw home, but the throw to second was misplayed and allowed the runner to score to give the Crimson Wave the win.
Edan Playa went 6.1 innings in the circle in relief with four strikeouts and one walk. She allowed just three hits.
Chapel Cunningham gave the Fire a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game when she scored on a wild pitch.
Hailey Brooks made it 2-0 in the second on a double to left field. The Fire broke the game open in the third with nine runs on eight hits.
Sekinger added another RBI with a single to right and Wasserstrom made it 4-0 with a single to left.
Danielle Wasserstrom added a single to right and a bases-loaded walk to Brooks made it 6-0. A wild pitch compounded by a throwing error made it 8-0. Brooks scored on a throwing error following an infield single by Cunningham and an RBI groundout by Gonzalez made it 10-0.
Sekinger's second RBI single to right pushed the lead to 11 that inning.
A wild pitch and a walk in the fourth pushed the lead to 13 and another wild pitch scored the final run.
Maria Zelenka picked up her second complete game victory in as many days with five shutout innings. Zelenka allowed just two hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Sekinger led the offense with a 3-for-3 effort with two RBIs. Brooks also added two RBIs. Cunningham and
Alex Hilton added two hits each.
The Fire return to the field on Tuesday when they host Mount Mercy for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
