LAKELAND, Fla.-Five contests, including the start of conference play, await the 16-8 Fire softball team this week, starting tomorrow afternoon.
Coming off a successful 5-1 week, the Fire come into this week with a doubleheader tomorrow against Mount Mercy University, and begin Sun Conference action on Friday and Saturday versus St. Thomas University.
Currently, Southeastern holds a .330 average, with a 96% success rate on stolen bases, stealing 80 bags, ranking second in the NAIA. They are led by
Ella Brooks, who boasts a team best .426 average,
Chapel Cunningham right behind her hitting .417. Defensively, the Fire hold a 1.88 ERA in the circle, and are led by Southeastern veterans
Autumn Hunter and
Claire Sekinger, who both have over 50 innings each, holding sub-three ERAs.
The Fire kick off their week Tuesday afternoon, hosting a doubleheader versus the Mount Mercy Mustangs. Mustang softball stands even with a 7-7 record, hitting .259 as a team with an ERA just over 4.00. Southeastern is currently undefeated all-time against the Mustangs, with a 7-0 record, the most recent win being an 8-0 mercy rule two years ago.
Things get interesting later in the week, as the Fire start conference play at home, hosting the St. Thomas Bobcats. They come into the week with an impressive 17-1 record, losing their lone game in extra innings by just one run. The Bobcats are hitting .342 as a team, with nine home runs and an even 100 runs batted in, led by the .478 hitting Anna Toon. They also post an overall 2.34 ERA in the circle, striking out 110 on just 27 walks.
