Walks Help Baseball to Sweep of West Coast Trip

GLENDALE, Ariz.—Southeastern hitters drew 11 walks in a 10-3 win over third-ranked Lewis-Clark State to open the season 6-0 and finish a perfect 3-0 during the trip to the East-West Challenge.

The Fire opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first when Josh Smith doubled down the left field line, scoring Josh Pigozzo and Isaac Nunez who both reached on walks.

In the second, the Fire added a run after Pablo Lanzarote walked and scored on a passed ball. Pigozzo's two-run homer later that inning gave the top-ranked Fire a 5-0 lead.

That was plenty of support for the six SEU pitchers that saw time on the hill today with Lex Garcia earning the win with two shutout innings with a hit, two strikeouts, a walk, and two hit batters. Robb Adams allowed just one hit and one walk in two innings of work with a pair of strikeouts. Ramsey David worked a clean sixth and seventh with three strikeouts and Nick Gottilla struck out the side in the eighth.

Daniel Cerda increased the lead to six in the third with a two-out single through the left side to score Gary Lora.

The Warriors got on the board with a two-out single to left field in the fourth. Two innings later, Landrey Wilkerson answered with a two-run homer to center to make it 8-1. Two more runs came home that inning on an error.

LC State added the final two runs on a two-out, two-run homer to right field.

The Fire will be back in action at home on Thursday against Oklahoma Wesleyan.
