Women’s Basketball Uses Stout Defense Secures Road Victory

The Fire completed their season sweep of Coastal Georgia, taking to the road and defeating the Mariners in Brunswick by a score of 62-48.

    Shots came quick and early as the Fire bolted out the gates going up 12-0 as Mya Herman and Kiki Britzmann knocked down threes on back to back possessions. Britzmann had ten points and three assists, Mya Herman tied for the team's leading scorer with 12 points on 5-11 shooting.

    The Fire extended their lead to as much as 13 in the second quarter going up 36-23 with 2:06 left thanks to a layup from Kassidy Jones who finished with 12 points and five rebounds.

    The Mariners battled back, going on a small 5-0 spurt into halftime to make it a 36-28 deficit, and would continue to battle getting within six at the 2:55 mark in the 3rd quarter as Sonia Forney knocked down a pair of free throws. Forney ended the contest with nine points and 12 rebounds.

    Consistent defensive efforts aided the Fire through the rest of the contest, despite being out rebounded by 14, Southeastern held the Mariners to 28 percent shooting. Bekki Kalaydjiev led the Fire in rebounds collecting eight, forward Ariana Smuda rejected two shots, and the 21st overall defense forced 20 turnovers, holding the Mariners to just 20 points in the second half.

    Southeastern returns home to defend the Furnace from the visiting Florida Memorial Lions, whom they have already claimed one victory against this season. That game is February 21, and the tip off is at 5:30 p.m.
