Softball Goes 1-1 in Split Doubleheader

LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern was unable to maintain the offensive momentum it had in the first game of the day into the second, dropping a 4-2 game to Florida National after a 7-1 win over New College of Florida.

Raylei McKinney gave the Fire a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single to center field and Danielle Wasserstrom made it 2-0 in the second on a fielder's choice to third base to score Riley Sanders, who had a three-hit game.

The Fire plated four in the third getting an RBI single from Alex Hilton, who posted three hits in the game, and another RBI fielder's choice by Wasserstrom. Ella Brooks smashed a ball to the center field wall to bring in two more to give the Fire a six-run lead.

New College scored in the sixth on the back end of a double steal which saw the runner going to second thrown out by Hilton. Kaitlyn Quillen doubled in the sixth to give the Fire their final run.

Chapel Cunningham added three hits to the offense as well.

Autumn Hunter improved to 2-1 on the season in the circle with four shutout innings of work with six strikeouts. Maria Zelenka picked up her first save with three innings of work.

In the second game, Claire Sekinger was perfect through 3.1 innings. In five innings, she struck out nine total hitters.

The Conquistadors tied the game at one in the fourth on a sacrifice fly then took a 4-1 lead in the sixth on a three-run homer.

At the plate, the Fire flew out 14 times. They got their second run in the bottom of the sixth on a Leah Gonzalez double, but a pair of flyouts stranded two more baserunners.

The Fire also threatened in the bottom of the seventh with first and second but a groundout ended the contest.

Brooks and Gonzalez had two hits each.

The Fire will take on Grand View at home on Thursday for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
