Women’s Basketball Overcomes Offensive Struggles in Road Win

Southeastern women's basketball improved to 17-6 on the season with a 70-59 win at Webber International and picked up their eighth Sun Conference win in 10 games.

Despite a 9-0 run to open the game, the offense struggled to hit in the first half making only ten field goals, and turning the ball over eight times. The Fire took a two point lead into the second quarter, going up 16-14.

The Fire and Warriors would go back and forth with Samantha Pacheco knocking down a three to take a 17-16 lead on the first possession of the second quarter. This was the trend for the quarter, trading baskets and trading leads with the biggest lead being the Fire four-point advantage with 3:29 left in the first half. The Warriors would battle back taking the lead 31-30 with 32 seconds left, but a late foul and a single Britzmann free throw would tie the game 31-31 going into half. Britzmann turned in her second-highest point total of the season with 16 and added 10 rebounds.

The second half started much slower for the Fire. The Warriors exploded out of the locker room going up 38-33 at the 7:34 mark of the third quarter. That was when the Fire offense woke up, scoring four 3-pointers in their next six possessions going up 44-38. They would also use another late third quarter run to go up 54-44 into the fourth.

Bekki Kalaydjiev led the way for the Fire, adding 18 points to her season totals going 8-11 from the field, and the Fire defense forced 18 turnovers. Mya Herman added 12 points and a season high for SEU, seven steals. Anja Knoflach chipped in 11 points.

The Fire host the second place in conference St. Thomas Bobcats on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
