Fire Top Royals, Clinch Playoff Bye

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Fire continued their late season success Wednesday. Southeastern University finished strong in each set, sweeping the match and the season series from Warner University, 3-0, in Sun Conference volleyball action at The Furnace.

Warner started fast and held the opening-set lead until a six-point SEU spurt edged it ahead 21-18. The Fire posted four of the final six tallies for a 25-20 final. The Royals again led set number two until the Fire ran off the final four points for a 25-22 score. SEU recorded five points in a row early in the third set and led the rest of the way before it closed out the match, 25-20.

With the win, SEU clinches the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Sun Conference Tournament and a bye in the quarterfinals. It was also the eighth straight win in the series with Warner and fourth in the row in Lakeland. The Fire improved to 18-4 overall and 11-2 in The Sun Conference with its fourth win in a row. Warner dropped to 9-14 and 3-10 in the Conference.

Kennedy Jones and Yarelis Lopez paced the home front row with nine kills apiece. Jones added 13 digs, three aces and two blocks, while Lopez chipped in 21 digs, two assists and two aces. Cambry Pope contributed six kills, nine digs and a block. Chapel Cunningham posted five kills, three digs and a pair of blocks.

Sylvia Liszewski added four kills, a block and one dig. Emma Reed chipped in two kills and five total blocks, while Angelina Vaccaro was in on a pair of blocks.

Alexandra Postlethwaite recorded the lone double-double with 15 digs, 13 assists and an ace. Haven Speer handed out 18 assists to go with seven digs, two kills and a block. Marysa Connors dug 26 attacks and gave out three assists.

The Fire finish out the regular season when they host No. 10 St. Thomas on Saturday for Senior Day. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
