LAKELAND, Fla. – The Fire are coming on late in the season. Southeastern University received an early second-half Madelyn Davidson goal and its defense did the rest in a 1-0 shutout over Florida Memorial Saturday afternoon.
After controlling the opening half, SEU broke up the scoreless deadlock until Davidson found the back of the net for the ninth time this season only 2:44 into the second half. Fire keeper Ella Sebree turned away the Lions' two late shots on goal at 66:20 and 81:41 and preserved the shutout.
With the win, SEU recorded its second shutout of the season to go with a 2-0 final at Warner University on Sept. 25. The Fire also are 2-0-1 over its last three matches and improved to an even 6-6-2 on the year and 4-3-1 in The Sun Conference. Florida Memorial is now 8-5-2 and 4-4-2 in the Conference.
SEU out-shot the visitors by a 14-5 margin over the match and 8-3 with boots onto the net.
Sebree had not faced a shot on goal until she saved the two Lions attempts in the final 23:40 of the match.
After the Davidson goal, both Abby Ripple (48:04) and Katie Carnes (57:14) both tried to make it a two-goal game but the attempts were saved.
SEU moves onto The Sun Conference Quarterfinals on Thursday as the No. 3 seed and will get a rematch with No. 6 Florida Memorial. Kick off is at 7:30 p.m..
