Wrestling Advances to National Dual Semifinals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—Southeastern went 2-0 during the first day of competition at the UNI Dome, home of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Multi-Division National Duals.

The Fire won the last seven matches to knock off Marian 32-9 and used bonus points for a 20-16 victory over Southern Oregon in the quarterfinal.

In the first round, the Fire trailed 9-0 after a loss in sudden victory at 133 and a one-point loss to the second-ranked 141-pounder. Parker Dobrocky and Sal Silva started to move momentum towards the Red and Black with technical falls to take a 10-9 lead and Trace Braun made quick work of his opponent with a pin in just 21 seconds to fire up the bench.

Graham Calhoun won his SEU debut with a 6-3 decision over seventh-ranked Elliott Rodgers at 174. Jeff Geller won by major decision, Gentry Smith was a 4-0 winner, and Gabe Jacobs ended the match with a first period fall.

Southern Oregon, the alma mater of head coach Travis Patrick, was in search of its second upset of the day after beating No. 5 Doane by one in the first round. The teams alternated victories throughout the dual with SOU drawing first blood with a major decision. Andrew Voiles got the Fire on the board with a 5-2 decision and top-ranked Evan Potter answered for the Raiders.

Dobrocky picked up a major decision to even things up at seven through four matches. Again, Braun came through with bonus points with a 15-2 major decision win to give the Fire an 11-10 lead with four matches remaining. Geller picked up a 13-9 win to answer the victory by No. 5 Alex Hernandez of SOU at 174. A win by decision by the Raiders at 197 gave them a two-point lead heading into the winner-take-all 285-pound match.

Jacobs registered his second first period fall of the day to secure the match and a spot in the semifinals for the second time in as many years.

The Fire will face No. 2 Life tomorrow at noon eastern with the winner advancing to the final and the loser wrestling for third.
