The Fire End Overwatch Drought

The Fire Overwatch team improved their Sun Conference record to 1-1 after a win over Keiser University.

Following a shaky start to the season against SCAD, the Fire were quick to bounce back with a dominant 3-0 win, breaking their nearly two-season long losing streak.

Map one was a control point round, where the Fire was hot out of the gate winning the opening team fight. Both points went to the Fire to close out map one with a 2-0 victory. Generating early picks was a struggle for the Fire, but they managed to rally to multiple team fights wins where they were consistently undermanned. The play of the game came from Lucio main Jakin Hawkins (FlameThief), who helped his team win an early team fight with a three elimination "boop" to knock the Keiser team off the map.

Team captain Michael Parsons (Destro) and DPS player Avery Lanning (ZetaWolf) also had a well timed ultimate combo to win a teamfight. The second map was payload, and the Fire continued their hot start by pushing the payload across the map unchallenged, saving themselves over three minutes on the clock once they arrived at the final checkpoint. During the defensive portion of the round, the Fire bent but didn't break as Keiser secured both the payload point and the first checkpoint, nearly forcing overtime before the Fire had an incredible two minute hold led by tank player Eli Weltman (MiniBruno).

Playing Ramattra for the majority of the night, Weltman also made the play of the game with a three kill ultimate that allowed the Fire to reach the first checkpoint.

Keiser did not plan on going down without a fight on map three, a flashpoint round. After adjusting to a series of swaps the Fire made, including Weltman on Junker Queen and Dakota Malizia (Wh1ze) moving from Mei to Reaper, Keizer boxed out their competition defensively to command the first flashpoint. The Fire was quick to respond, capping the next two points before Keizer tied things up 2-2. Coordinating ultimates allowed the Fire to take the final flashpoint, winning map three and the whole match. Weltman secured his second play of the game on map three.

When asked about the win, Parsons was all smiles. "It feels good. It's my first win as captain and a lot of these guys' first competitive wins ever. We played well and the team as a whole had significantly better communication and teamplay than last week. Now we just have to keep it rolling."

The Fire will have the opportunity to "keep it rolling" next week when they play their week three match on Thursday at 8 p.m. Eastern.
