LAKELAND, Fla.—A six-run second inning was plenty for Southeastern to come away with a 10-3 win over Ottawa to sweep the three-game series.
Josh Pigozzo was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to get the scoring started, then a bases-loaded squeeze play by
Landrey Wilkerson pushed the lead to two.
Isaac Nunez launched a ball over the left field wall in the next at bat for a grand slam and a six-run advantage.
"Energy is high, everyone is swinging it well, our pitching staff is unbelievable, and the energy is amazing," said Nunez of the first three games. "It was an exciting weekend and everyone is getting in a flow getting ready for the next games."
That was plenty of support for the Fire pitching staff with starter
Robb Adams getting the win with three shutout innings. He allowed three hits and hit one batter with three strikeouts and also picked off a pair of baserunners.
SEU pitchers recorded 15 strikeouts led by
Ramsey David's four against six batters.
Southeastern picked up a run in the third on an RBI groundout by
Daniel Cerda, and
Gary Lora's two-run homer to left in the fourth put the Fire up nine.
Josh Smith made it 10-0 in the fifth with an RBI single to center field.
Ottawa got on the board in the sixth with a three-run homer.
Nunez and Lora had two hits each for the Fire.
"That was a big swing early from Isaac, but those are two guys we expect to be catalysts and leaders for our team," said coach
Adrian Dinkel.
The Fire were able to get 24 different players into today's game.
"It was a good opportunity to get as many guys on the mound as we could and for those guys to show well," said Dinkel. "I think a lot of them proved that it's going to be a battle at the back end of the bullpen."
Southeastern will return to action on Thursday in Arizona against Benedictine University-Mesa.
