Softball Falls in Marathon Tournament Championship Game

CLEARWATER, Fla.—Southeastern came up short of winning The Sun Conference Tournament for the first time in program history with a 4-2 loss in 11 innings to Coastal Georgia on Saturday.

The Fire led 2-1 after four innings, getting an RBI double from Erica Stahl and an RBI single from Danielle Wasserstrom in the fourth. The lone run for the Mariners (40-10) came in the third on a solo homer by Kayla Rowell.

That was the only hit the Mariners had in the game until the top of the sixth when Bryce Peacock tripled to the right field corner to tie the game.

Southeastern had a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the seventh when Wasserstrom led off the inning with a double down the left field line and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. The inning took a turn when a missed bunt turned into a batter's interference call for the second out and a ground ball to second ended the threat.

The Fire also had two in scoring position in the eighth, but a flyout to foul territory ended the inning.

Claire Sekinger was stellar in the pitching circle, going 10 innings and throwing 150 pitches and exited with runners at first and second in the 11th.

The Mariners picked up a bases-loaded single off the center field wall and a sacrifice fly in the 11th to clinch the game.

Wasserstrom and Stahl had two hits each to lead the offense.

The Fire will await an at-large bid to the NAIA National Tournament First Round, announced Thursday.
