Sun Conference Play Begins for SEU Softball

LAKELAND, Fla.-After a seven-game week last week that saw the Fire take four wins over NAIA Top 25 competitors, Southeastern softball will host Calumet College of St. Joseph on Tuesday at 1 and 3 p.m. and will open their Sun Conference schedule on Saturday as they host No. 23 ranked Webber International at 1 and 3 p.m.

Southeastern went 5-2 last week to move their overall record to 7-8 after hitting a collective .305 with 27 runs scored. Erica Stahl and Riley Sanders led the way offensively over the seven-game stretch with Stahl posting a .444 average and Sanders posting a .440 average with 11 hits, six runs scored, and eight stolen bases. Freshman Lauren Sekinger also had a productive week at the plate, tallying five RBI's and a .381 average while Jamie Mead was the top run-producer with six RBI's.

On the mound, Autumn Hunter went 3-1 highlighted by a seven-inning shutout of Michigan-Dearborn and a complete game victory over No. 12 ranked William Carey. Hunter allowed just four earned runs in 18.1 innings of work while striking out nine. Claire Sekinger went 2-0 on the week with wins over No. 24 ranked University of the Cumberlands and No. 8 ranked Central Methodist. The sophomore tallied 25 strikeouts in 23.2 innings of work, 15 of which came in the 4-1 victory over the Patriots.

The Crimson Wave holds a current record of 5-9 and collective batting average of .308 for an average of 5.5 runs per contest. Sophomore Adelina Staden has been the biggest offensive threat in the Crimson Wave lineup as she holds an average of .488 with 10 doubles through 13 games, which ranks third in the NAIA, and two home runs for a slugging percentage of .860. Staden also leads the Crimson Wave in RBI's with 13. Kenzie Lanman has shouldered most of the work on the mound, tallying a 3.31 ERA through 36 innings of work.

Southeastern holds a historical record of 14-4 against the Crimson Wave with the Fire sweeping the doubleheader last season at home by scores of 10-1 (six innings) and 11-6.

The No. 24 ranked Warriors (2-8) have competed against five different NAIA Top 25 opponents in their 10-game stretch to open the season and managed a sweep over No. 11 ranked Grand View University by scores of 4-1 and 3-1. The Warriors offense is looking to find some rhythm as they hold a current .214 collective batting average led by a .381 average by Maddie Houtz. Taylor Thomas and Jenna Chaudoin have split pitching responsibilities with Taylor posting a 2.40 ERA through 23.1 innings and Chaudoin posting a 4.14 ERA through 22 innings. Collectively, the pitching staff holds a 3.45 ERA with opponents hitting .292 against them.

The Warriors beat out the Fire in the SUN tournament championship last season to claim the title but Southeastern responded in a big way with a walk-off victory over the Warriors in game one of the NAIA World Series.
