LAKELAND, Fla.- Southeastern softball advanced their overall record to 23-9 today with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Florida National University by scores of 2-1 and 3-1.
In game one,
Autumn Hunter advanced to 9-4 on the season with a complete game where she allowed just one run on eight hits and struck out four.
The only two Fire runs of game one came off the bat of
Erica Stahl after
Chapel Cunningham drew a walk, stole second, and scored on a Stahl opposite field home run, her third of the season.
The deficit was cut in half in the top of the fifth after a leadoff walk and single put runners on first and second with no outs. Another single two batters later moved the score to 2-1.
In the top of the seventh, the Conquistadors threatened with a leadoff walk but a diving double play by Hunter and a runner cut down at the plate by
Haleigh Harrell and
Leah Gonzalez concluded game one.
Game two saw
Kenzie Forrester toss her third complete game of the season after allowing just two hits and an unearned run to give the Fire the 3-1 victory. Forrester also struck out five.
The Fire again scored all of their runs in the first inning after Cunningham singled and stole second and came around on an RBI double by
Jamie Mead. Stahl then followed with a single and stolen base, later coming around on a Gonzalez sacrifice bunt and
Lauren Sekinger RBI single to move the contest to 3-0.
The lone Florida National run came in the third after back-to-back two-out singles and an error which allowed the unearned run to cross.
Cunningham concluded game two 2-3 with a run scored.
Southeastern will next look to a Sun Conference three-game series against No. 24 Coastal Georgia next weekend.
