BABSON PARK, Fla. - The Southeastern University Fire women's basketball team dropped to 12-11 on the season after suffering an airtight 70-69 loss to Sun Conference opponent Webber International.
Southeastern found themselves trailing the Warriors early 7-3 within the first two minutes of the game. The Fire responded by converting points from defensive stops to put together a 9-0 run to gain the lead with 3:47 remaining in the first quarter. The Warriors put together a run of their own to regain the lead 18-12 heading into the second. SEU quickly tied the game in the second quarter with back to back three-pointers from Anja Knoflach and Josselin Geer, both assisted by Emilia Sexton. A mid-range jumper from Sexton would give the Fire the lead and they would hold the lead all the way up to the half.
At the half Southeastern led 37-30, shooting 38.4% from the field, 28.5% from the three-point line, and 75% from the free throw line.
Coming out of the half, both teams would trade baskets until the Warriors would force defensive stops while continuing to convert on the offensive side. The Warriors would eventually tied the game with 38 seconds remaining in the third quarter after they converted on a deep three-pointer.
The Fire would trail by one early in the fourth quarter and would trade or tie the lead eight times heading down the stretch with neither team gaining a comfortable lead. With the score tied 66-66 with 1:57 remaining, the Warriors would convert on offense on back to back possessions to gain a four-point lead. Gabby Suarez responded with a three-pointer to cut the lead to one followed by a crucial Southeastern timeout. SEU rebounded the ball after a Warrior's miss that was followed up with a timeout at the next deadball. Southeastern put up a three-point attempt with two seconds remaining to take the lead and the game but ultimately came up short.
As a team, Southeastern shot 34.7% from the field, 26.7% from behind the arc, and 68.8% from the free throw line.
Kiki Britzmann led the game in points with 20 on 50% shooting and added six rebounds with three assists.
Josselin Geer led the team in rebounds with seven and added 12 points with two blocks.
Emilia Sexton led the team in assists with six and added eight points and three steals.
The Fire returned to action Thursday, February 9th to host St. Thomas.
