Softball Swept by Bears

The No. 4 Southeastern softball team was swept by Truett McConnell today by scores of 6-4 and 4-3 to move their overall record to 2-2 on the season.

In game one, the Bears took advantage of a leadoff walk after Briley Lawson's RBI single up the middle scored the first run of the contest. Soon after, the Bears advanced their lead to three after a costly two-run error by the Fire defense.

Lawson grabbed her second RBI of the game with a solo home run into left field, extending the Fire deficit to 4-0 in the third.

In the bottom of the fifth, the first Fire run would come in the form of a RBI infield single by Riley Sanders, scoring Alex Hilton after reaching on a leadoff single.

After replacing Autumn Hunter on the mound in the top of the fifth, Claire Sekinger was victim to the Bears second long ball of the game, conceding a 6-1 lead.

Chapel Cunningham would put her team in a response situation after leading off the inning with a single and scoring from first on an RBI double from Leah Gonzalez. Freshman Mallory Watts would repeat the cycle with her own RBI double, cutting the Fire deficit in half.

Watts would again come through in a clutch situation with an RBI single in the bottom of the 7th but the Fire would strand two base runners to drop game one 6-4.

Hunter would move to 1-1 on the season after going 4 innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits. Gonzalez and Cunningham would both end game one going 3-4 while Sanders would swipe two bags.

Game two ended in bizarre fashion after being called in the top of the sixth due to sunset. Lawson repeated her trend from game one, putting her team on the board in the first with an RBI single. Ellie Abner would then follow Lawson with a blast over the left field fence for a two-RBI home run as the Fire would concede a 3-0 lead off five hits in the first.

It was then the Fire's turn to take advantage of the leadoff walk as Sanders would reach on the free pass, steal second, advance to third on an error, and score on an RBI groundout by Erica Stahl. Haleigh Harrell would then bring the Fire within one with an RBI single up the middle.

The Bears would then take a 4-2 lead in the second after two singles and two walks.

With the sun setting and time winding down for the comeback, the Fire executed textbook softball with a leadoff walk by Alex Hilton and sacrifice bunt by Lauren Sekinger. Sanders would then single up the middle, setting up an RBI groundout by Jamie Mead.

The umpires would then make the decision to call ball game with two outs in the top of the sixth, giving the Bears the 4-3 victory and clean sweep.

Kenzie Forrester would earn the loss after giving up eight hits and four runs in three innings while Sekinger came on in the fourth and threw a spotless 2.2 innings with four strikeouts. The Fire were held to just two hits through five innings with Sanders claiming two more stolen bases.

Southeastern will have a tall task as they next host No. 2 ranked University of Mobile on Thursday at 1 & 3 p.m.
