MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - The Southeastern University Fire men's basketball team improved to 15-12 (11-4 SUN) on the season defeating Sun Conference opponent Florida Memorial 85-74.
The Fire started this contest leading 12-4 within the first four minutes of the game. Southeastern took advantage of the Lions not being able to convert on the offensive side of the court. After a Florida Memorial timeout, the Lions started to catch rhythm and put together an 8-2 run to get within three of the Fire. The Lions would eventually seize the lead from Southeastern with 8:09 remaining. SEU found themselves trailing by as many as four during the Lions run. The Fire would regain the lead after making three defensive stops while converting them into points on the other end. Heading into the half, Southeastern held a 41-35 lead.
At the half, Southeastern shot 54.5% from the field, 0/10 from the three-point line, and 55.6% from the free throw line.
In the second half, the Fire scored on three consecutive possessions to extend their lead to 12. The Lions responded by putting together the best run of the game by outscoring Southeastern 14-2 to tie the game 49-49 with 14:26 remaining. Within seconds, Reggie Messidor answered by giving SEU their first made three-point of the game to take the lead. This shot sparked an 11-3 run that would put the Fire in front by a margin that ultimately turned into a 14-point lead with a little over five minutes remaining. The Fire took the victory as the Lion's comeback efforts were not successful as time expired.
As a team, Southeastern shot 56.3% from the field, 13% from behind the arc, and 64.7% from the free throw line.
Riley Minix led all players with a double-double with 38 points and 12 rebounds.
Joshua Blazquez also recorded a double-double with 11 points and led all in assists with 11.
The Fire return to action for Senior Night February 16th to host Keiser.
