BABSON PARK, Fla.—Forcing 31 turnovers led to 32 points to help Southeastern knock off Shawnee State on Friday in a game played at Webber International.
Southeastern (9-4) forced as many turnovers in the first half as points they allowed, holding a 35-17 lead at the break, limiting Shawnee State (8-4) to just four made field goals with seven of their points coming at the free throw line.
The Bears were successful on just one field goal in the second quarter at the 1:04 mark. An 8-0 run in the 90 seconds preceding helped the Fire hold their biggest lead of the half at 21 (35-14).
Shawnee State made a run coming out of the locker room, scoring the first six points of the second half to get within 12 just over a minute into the quarter. The Fire struggled in the third, missing all five 3-point attempts and four free throws but still held a 51-34 lead heading into the fourth.
A 3-pointer by
Anja Knoflach on SEU's first possession of the fourth pushed the lead back to 20. The Fire took a 26-point lead on a pair of free throws by
Kiki Britzmann at the 3:06 mark and then a three-point play by
Bekki Kalaydjiev at the 2:58 mark.
Kalaydjiev led all scorers with 17 points and dished out a game-high eight assists and led all players with six steals. Britzmann added 13 points and five boards.
Anaya Coleman had a balanced day with nine points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds.
The Fire will begin Sun Conference play on January 6
th at Ave Maria.
