Fire Use Gyrene Errors to Record Their 20th Win

AVE MARIA, Fla.- Grace Petty dominated the court tonight in the Fire's 3-1 Sun Conference over Ave Maria.
 
Petty helped push the Fire to 20-4 and 11-2 in SUN play with a 19-kill and 19-dig performance, tying her season high kill total.
 
Cambry Pope also recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs.
 
Southeastern took set one 25-21 despite trailing for a majority of the set. The Fire had a match-high 15 kills in set one, seven of which came from Petty. The Fire trailed deep into the set until a Gyrene attack error tied the set at 21, beginning a six-point Fire run to end the set. Within the six-point run, Petty recorded three kills with Chapel Cunningham recording two.
 
The Gyrene defense was a force in set two, coming up with six blocks and holding the Fire to just a .074 attack percentage to take set two 27-25.
 
In set three, the Fire held a 7-4 lead until five Fire errors gave the Gyrenes a 10-8 lead. The Fire responded a few points later with five unanswered to retake the lead but three Gyrene kills brought the score to 21-19 in favor of the home team. Three attack errors by the Gyrenes then gave the Fire the 23-21 edge but two kills and a Fire attack error rounded out the 27-25 set.
 
The Fire responded with an impressive .355 attack percentage in set three and jumped out to an early 7-1 lead, holding the lead for the entirety of the set.
 
Southeastern secured the match with a 25-21 set four win after 11 attack errors from the Gyrenes. Three-straight points by the Gyrenes tied the set at 19 but a kill by Cunningham would conclude the set and the match.
 
Emilia Harding led the match with six blocks while Alexandra Postlethwaite recorded 47 assists.
 
Southeastern will next host Florida Memorial on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the regular season finale.
