WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- On the back of a season-best performance from transfer
Emilia Sexton, Southeastern women's basketball advanced to 5-3 in Sun Conference play tonight with a 75-69 victory over the Keiser University Seahawks to move to 8-10 on the season.
Sexton concluded the contest with a team-best 21 points after going 8-13 from the field and 5-10 from three-point range.
The Fire got out to a slow start after being outscored by the home team 17-13 in the first quarter after going 38% from the field and 3-10 from distance. The Seahawks went on a 9-0 run to advance their lead to as much as seven in the first quarter but two made three-point shots from Sexton and a matching bucket from
Anja Knoflach got the Fire back up by one with just a minute remaining in the quarter. A three-point shot and good jumper by the Seahawks would give them the 17-13 lead after 10 minutes.
The offense warmed up in the second quarter, shooting 50% from the field but were just outdone by the Seahawks, 18-17. Trailing by 11 with 6:43 left before the half,
Kiki Britzmann would tally five quick points to help the Fire cut the deficit to 29-25 while another basket from distance by Knoflach would put the Fire down one with just over two minutes remaining. The Seahawks would hit two late three-pointers to take a 35-30 lead into the half.
Southeastern came out of the locker room with a determination that propelled a 58% effort from midrange and 50% effort from beyond the arc in the second half as they would outscore their opponent 45-34 to take the 75-69 road victory. Sexton would conclude the half with 13 points after going 5-6 and 3-4 while Knoflach would record 11, going 5-10 from the field.
Josselin Geer would also drop 11 of her 13 points in the second half to aid the Fire come-from-behind victory.
Britzmann would conclude the contest just one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds while Knoflach ended the night as the Fire's second leading scorer with 17.
The Fire will be back on the road Thursday at 5:30 p.m. as they take on Ave Maria University.
