LAKELAND Fla. - The No. 18 Southeastern University men's basketball team got the best of the Webber International Warriors this time around, winning this Sun Conference match-up 71-59.
Southeastern found themselves trailing early in this contest as the Warriors seem to have had everything going for them. Webber International led by as many as nine with 7:38 remaining left in the first half. The Fire trailing 24-15 at this point, cut the deficit with a huge three-pointer by Riley Minx and continued to rally back into this game. The Fire capitalized on their defensive efforts and went on a 12-3 run to tie the game up 27-27 heading into the half.
At the half, Minix accounted for 16 points shooting 57% from beyond the arc.
Coming out of the haf, the Fire capitalized off of a great defensive effort from Devon Ford after he blocked the Warriors layup and scored a layup of his own in transition to give the Fire their first lead of the game at 29-27. Southeastern remained in front, but couldn't seem to pull awayas the Warriors continued to trade baskets back and forth.The Fire used a 10-4 run to gain their biggest lead of the game to extend their lead to 59-50.. Southeastern continued with their momentum knocking down shots to extend their lead to as much as 18 with 1:41 remaining. Warriors ultimately fall short with their late game rally.
Southeastern as a team shot 39.5% from the field, 37.1% from the three-point line and 73.7% from the free throw line.
Riley Minix came up big for the Fire finishing with 32 points, 10 rebounds, while shooting 46% from the three-point line making 6-13. Jordan Gorman added 16 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Southeastern Fire return to action on February 10th, on the road to face St. Thomas University at 7:30 PM in Miami Gardens, Fla.
