LAKELAND, Fla.- A new season begins this week for No. 17 Southeastern University men's basketball (2-1) as Sun Conference play begins with a road contest against Ave Maria University at 2:30 p.m.
The Fire most recently took on Florida National in their home opener, taking the 80-64 victory to claim their second win of the season.
Collectively, the Fire average 84.3 points per contest behind a .488 field goal percentage and .329 three-point percentage. Senior Riley Minix has registered a double-double in all three contests thus far as he now averages 28 points per game and 16.7 rebounds per game. Reggie Mesidor continues to be the Fire's sixth man, averaging 16.7 points per contest off the bench for a second-best 50 total points. The senior also leads the team in field goal percentage and three-point percentage, shooting 61% from mid-range and 59% from distance. Junior Sean Shore has also had a strong start to the season as he averages just below a double-double with 12.7 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game.
The Gyrenes begin the week with a matching 2-1 record after dropping their last contest to receiving votes Madonna and will take on Webber International on Thursday before the Saturday contest against the Fire.
Through the three contests, the Gyrenes average 78 points per contest and hold a current field goal percentage of .474 and average nearly eight three-pointers per contest. Matt Gillis leads the Gyrene offense with 39 points for an average of 13 points per game while Klajd Kiri holds a team-high field goal percentage of 65%. Defensively, AMU averages 40.3 rebounds per game with Kiri holding a team-best 23 rebounds.
Last season, the Fire took two of the three matchups from the Gyrenes but dropped the Sun Conference Tournament Semifinal matchup by a score of 84-64.
