Box Score AVE MARIA, Fla.- One minute and 16 seconds was all that the No. 10 Southeastern University Fire (9-1-2, 3-0-1 SUN) needed to erase a 1-0 deficit and go on to claim the 5-1 victory over Ave Maria University (4-5-4, 1-3-1 SUN).
Katie Carnes and
Ariadna Lozano would each collect their second goal of the season in the 39
th and 40
th minute after the Gyrenes jumped out to an early lead due to a defensive miscue by the Fire that allowed for a quick steal and goal three minutes into the contest. The Fire offense struggled to best the Gyrene defense for most of the first half until Carnes managed to beat her defender and put a deep shot past the keeper. Shortly following, Lozano took an assist from
Naira Lopez and turned it into a 2-1 Fire lead heading into the second half.
Insurance would come in the 53
rd minute when
Ramsey Watkins took a long pass downfield from Carnes and punched it past a diving keeper for the 3-1 lead.
Karissa King was not satisfied with the two-goal lead and would double that lead with two goals in seven minutes. In the 70
th minute, King grabbed her third goal of the season and the Fire's fourth of the day after blasting a shot into the left side of the goal off a Lozano assist. Seven minutes later, King managed to beat three Gyrene defenders and put a shot in the same place for the 5-1 lead with 13 minutes remaining in the contest.
Holly Eddins would conclude the match with six saves and advance her record to 8-1-2.
The Fire will next have the tall task of the No. 1 ranked Keiser University at home on Saturday at 3 p.m.
