LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Southeastern won two matches in the consolation bracket of the NWCA Multi-Division National Dual Championship to advance to Friday's placement matches.
The Fire dropped its first dual match of the year with a 21-18 loss to Campbellsville but came back with a 46-6 win over Brewton-Parker and a 24-13 win over Cumberland to advance.
SEU trailed Campbellsville 10-9 after five matches, getting a technical fall from
Isaac Crowell and a major decision from
Sal Silva. The Tigers answered with a pin at 165 then a decision at 174 and a win in sudden victory at 184.
Blake Rypel tried to get momentum back the way of the Fire by bumping up to 197 and sticking the 16
th ranked wrestler Gabe Martinez. The Tigers were docked a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct to bring the match back within reach with a pin, but
Gage Braun bumped up to 285 and came away with a decision.
The Fire met little resistance in its first elimination match, winning nine of the 10 bouts against Brewton-Parker. Seven of the nine wins resulted in bonus points with
Xavier Williamson,
Trace Braun,
Wyatt Kirkham, and
Gage Braun recording falls.
Crowell got the match against Cumberland started by winning a battle of Top 10 wrestlers with the seventh ranked Crowell knocking off eighth-ranked Carter Cox by scoring a reversal and four nearfall points in the final minute of the third period to win 7-3. Rypel scored his second fall of the day, pinning Austin Antcliffe in the first period.
Gage Braun nearly knocked off sixth-ranked heavyweight Patrick DePiazza, but a takedown attempt by Braun at the end was not completed before time ran out according to the referee.
Southeastern will take on Indiana Tech at 9 a.m. with the winner advancing to the fifth-place match at 1 p.m. and the loser wrestling for seventh.
