LAKELAND, Fla.- In their eighth consecutive Sun Conference win of the season, the No. 2 ranked Southeastern University woman's basketball team took a 95-71 victory over the Lions of Florida Memorial to advance to 19-1 on the season.
Â
The Lions took the early lead with the first basket of the game but a three pointer by
Tahanee Bennell with 6:40 on the clock in the first quarter gave the Fire the 7-5 lead. The lead would be relinquished by the Fire a minute later but more successful shooting from beyond the arc, this time by
Haley Howarth, tipped the scale back the Fire's way as they went ahead 12-10. That would prove to be the last time the Lions saw the lead for the entirety of the contest as the Fire advanced their lead to 10 with 1:05 left in the first quarter after a
Leilah Vigil layup. The Fire would end the first quarter with the 27-15 lead after shooting 64.7% from the field and going 3-6 from three point range.
Â
Vigil kept the hot hand going into the second quarter after scoring seven consecutive points to open the quarter as the Fire went up 34-20. The Lions would then go on to string together a 7-0 run of their own to bring the score within eight with three minutes before halftime but the Fire would go on to extend the lead to 49-37 going into halftime.
Â
The Fire would go on to shoot 50% from the field in the third quarter and 52.9% in the fourth quarter to secure the 94-71 victory and advance their undefeated SUN record to 8-0.
Â
Angela Perry and Vigil were the Fire's leading scorers and rebounders with 15 points and six rebounds each while Bennell ended the night with a team high 9 assists.
Â
The Fire will next take on Ave Maria University in an away contest on Thursday at 8 p.m.
