MONTGOMERY, Ala.—Three interceptions and a fumble hurt Southeastern's chances in its road opener at Faulkner.
The Eagles came away with a 31-14 win, holding the Fire scoreless in the second half.
Southeastern got off to a solid start with a nine-play, 70-yard drive on their second possession of the night which was capped off by a seven-yard run by
Bryan Bell. Faulkner answered on the ensuing drive with an eight-play, 70-yard drive that ended with a two-yard TD pass.
That started a streak of 21 straight points by Faulkner in the first half that included an interception return for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter to make it 21-7 Eagles.
A two-yard dive off the left end by
Lorine Parker with 7:30 remaining in the second got the Fire within a touchdown at halftime.
Parker ended the day with 109 yards on 19 carries.
In the third quarter, the Fire recovered a muffed punt near midfield and drove inside the Faulkner 5-yard line but an interception ended the opportunity to tie the game. Down 31-14 in the fourth, the Fire drove to the Faulkner 26, but the Eagles intercepted a pass at their own 18.
Cooper Jones completed 26 of his 53 attempts for 216 yards.
Myles Henderson was the top target with six catches for 57 yards. Davonte Bowie had five catches for a team-high 68 yards.
On defense,
Khalid Scott and
Marc Viechec head had seven tackles with one for loss.
The Fire return to action on September 18
th at home against Thomas More University.
