Softball Closes Season with Split at USCB

HARDEEVILLE, S.C.—The 2021 season came to an end for the Southeastern University softball team with a doubleheader split at USCB on Saturday.

A 6-0 loss in the first game gave USCB the final spot in The Sun Conference Tournament and the Fire rallied back to win 8-6 in the second game.

The Fire were held to just three hits in the first game and committed two errors which both turned into runs in the first inning. USCB added four more runs in the third to come away with the win.

Southeastern got out to a 2-0 lead in the second game getting an RBI single from Ramsey Sullivan and an RBI double from Britt Robinson. USCB answered with three in the bottom of the third and another in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.

In the sixth, the Fire broke out for six runs on four hits to regain the lead. Madison Williams scored on a passed ball, then an RBI fielder's choice by Hannah Federico scored Madi Hecox to tie the game at four.

Robinson's second double of the game scored Federico to put the Fire up 5-4. An RBI single by Sam Holcomb brought in Sullivan to give SEU a two-run advantage. RBI singles by Lauren Watters and Katie Atkins made it 8-4 going to the bottom of the sixth.

Robinson finished 4-for-4 with a run scored. Atkins finished with two hits.

USCB answered with two more in the sixth, but had the bases loaded and threatened with more, but Peyton Varela got a flyout to end the inning.

Varela earned the save, re-entering after Payton Thomas worked 2.2 innings and earned her ninth win of the season. Varela worked 4.1 total innings, striking out two.

The Fire finish the season with a 29-22 overall record.
