Softball Donnie Smith

Softball Welcomes Mid-South Tandem to Lakeland

LAKELAND, Fla.—Off to a 3-0 start, the Southeastern softball team will host the University of the Cumberlands for a doubleheader Thursday afternoon, then will take on Campbellsville Friday.

Southeastern posted a team .353 batting average during its three-game sweep of Florida National last weekend with a .553 slugging percentage and a .423 on-base percentage. Katie Atkins hit .556 with a homer at the top of the stat sheet. The Fire also got five-hit weekends from Sam Holcomb who had a homer and three RBIs and Madison Williams, who chipped in a pair of grand slams to earn Sun Conference Player of the Week.

In the circle, freshman Autumn Hunter picked up all three wins, throwing 15.2 innings and held opposing hitters to a .259 average. All of her earned runs came in the first inning of both of her starts, but bounced back to shutout the Conquistadors the rest of the games.

Originally scheduled for Saturday, the Fire will take on the University of the Cumberlands Thursday at 1 and 3 p.m. to avoid the rain in Saturday's forecast. It will be the season opener for the Patriots which went 8-12 last season and split a doubleheader with the Fire on March 6th.

Madison Huber led the Patriots at the plate last year with a .350 average, four doubles and three home runs. Kaiti White is the top returning pitcher last season after working a team-high 46.1 innings with a team-best 2.57 ERA.

Campbellsville is coming off a 12-7 season last year and dropped their season opener today at Webber International 3-1. The two teams met in 2019 at the RussMat Softball Games in Winter Haven with the Tigers winning 4-3 and 4-2.

Tori Humphrey posted a .418 batting average with a .636 slugging percentage, and .543 on-base percentage during her shortened senior season last year. The Paducah, Ky. native holds a career .676 slugging percentage with 30 career homers and 145 RBIs. In the circle, Payton Blades went 5-1 with a 2.10 ERA in eight appearances as a freshman.
