LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern is looking to move to 3-0 against the Crossroads League this season when it hosts Spring Arbor University on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at The Furnace.
The Fire are 12-3 on the season following a 3-1 week last week with the lone loss to Olivet Nazarene which is receiving votes in the coaches' poll by four points. It was highlighted by a 78-76 win over No. 13 Grace which moved into the Top 10 the next day. SEU was 17-of-18 at the free throw line against Grace, led by
Riley Minix who was 11-for-11.
Minix earned Sun Conference Player of the Week honors after recording three double-doubles in four games to go along with his 1,000
th point.
The three SEU losses this season are by a combined nine points. As a team, the Fire are third in the NAIA in 3-pointers made per game at 11.3. Coming with that is good distribution and ball movement resulting in an average of 18.3 assists per game which is sixth nationally. Eight times this year SEU has made 10 or more 3-pointers and twice have connected on 20+. The Fire are 7-1 when making 10 or more 3-pointers.
Seven times this year Southeastern has recorded 20+ assists in a game.
During the month of December, the Fire are 77.9% as a team at the free throw line after starting the season 66.4% over their first eight games.
According to the Massey Ratings, the Crossroads League currently ranks as the third-toughest NAIA men's basketball conference this season and has won 64.8% of its out-of-conference games.
Spring Arbor was the 2019 NAIA Division II national champion but have only played 29 total games since being eliminated in one of the final games of the 2020 national tournament. The Cougars enter the week with a 3-9 record and will take on Ave Maria at The Furnace Tuesday at 4 p.m. looking to end a five-game slide.
Joshua Laman is the top scorer at 11.2 points per game, shooting 55.6% from the field.
