LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern couldn't keep up with Coastal Georgia's attack in The Sun Conference Volleyball Tournament Quarterfinal match Tuesday night.
The fifth-seeded Mariners hit .308 as a team with just 10 attack errors in 133 attempts to come away with a 3-0 victory at Southeastern to advance to Friday's semifinal at St. Thomas.
Southeastern led by three at four different points in a tightly-contested first set with the Mariners battling back to tie the set at 21 after the Fire held a 19-16 advantage. Despite committing five service errors, the Mariners came away with a 25-23 win in the opening set.
The Fire led by four twice in the second set, using a 4-1 run with kills by
Grace Petty and
Baylee Warneke along with a setting error and a service error to go up 12-8. CCGA responded with the next five points getting a pair of kills from Giovana Larregui Lopez and an ace from Skylar Gribben. Southeastern battled back again and led 18-17, but then ran into a run of errors that saw the Mariners win 25-22.
In the third, the Fire capitalized on an error by Larregui Lopez then got back to back kills from
Sandy Cao to lead 3-2. That ended up being the final attack error of the game for Coastal Georgia as it racked up 17 kills on 29 attempts in the set for a .552 attacking percentage.
After Southeastern led 5-4 in the third, the Mariners responded with a 5-0 run to go up 9-5 and put together another 5-0 run to lead 14-7 and control the match.
Cao finished with a double-double of 13 kills and 16 digs with a .257 attacking percentage.
Holly Kaczmarek and
Kennedy Jones were also in double figures in digs with 14 and 10, respectively.
Alexandra Postlethwaite had 15 assists and
Emily Eurice added 11 more.
