MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – On the road again for the second weekend in a row, the Fire women's basketball team did not let the traveling slow them down. SEU defeated Florida Memorial University 86-67 this afternoon in their second matchup of the year.
Off to a quick start, the Fire outscored the Lions 31-11 in the first quarter, hitting five threes in the first several minutes. The Fire also had nine assists and six steals in the first quarter alone.
SEU's largest lead was 82-44, but the Lions gained momentum in the fourth quarter, beating the Fire in the last quarter 28-13. Rebounding was a strong point for SEU, pulling down 55 rebounds as a team, 20 of those being offensive. The rebounds led to more second chance points offense and less opportunity for the Lions.
Gabrielle Ozoude had another stand out performance today, scoring 23 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. She also added three assists and three steals. Ozoude continues to be a dominating force inside but has also proved to be a threat from the free throw line and beyond.
Haley Howarth and
Madi Hecox both added 13 points for the Fire.
During their last matchup in December, the Fire won 88-54 over FMU. They were led by sophomore guard
Haley Howarth who scored 20 points and had eight rebounds.
SEU is back on the road next Thursday vs. Keiser at 5:30 p.m.
