Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Rebecca Cook

Dominant Second Half Leads Women's Basketball to 13th-Straight Win

LAKELAND, Fla. – Back on their home court, the Fire women's basketball team brought in another conference win over the Keiser Seahawks, winning 70-44. SEU led 27-22 at halftime but outscored the Seahawks by 14 in the 3rd quarter to boost them into the final quarter of play.

The Fire had an impressive performance from their post group tonight. Gabrielle Ozoude came off the bench with a game high of 15 points and eight rebounds, shooting 58 percent from the field. Carmen Handy finished the game with 13 points and six rebounds, shooting 50 percent from the field and going 1-2 for threes.

Ozoude speaks on having a strong group of post players. "Depth in the post helps in many different areas. A lot of our offense is post heavy, so having more people in that position to rotate and maintain healthy is great. The same concept can be applied for defense."

Handy is also grateful for the help she gets from her fellow posts. "Having a deep post group gives us the ability to continuously pound it in the paint, regardless of which combination of posts are on at any given moment. Not a lot of teams have that privilege!"

"Practice with the post group is one of my favorite things. It helps a lot with personal growth for each of the players I think." Ozoude says about the advantage she feels the team has with such a wide range of post players.

Guard Madi Hecox also finished in double figures, scoring 12 points for the Fire. An impressive and-one by Hecox with 7:20 to go in the 3rd quarter gave the team momentum and energy that helped propel them to victory.

The mentality was to take the game possession by possession. Handy feels as if this gave the team the ability to keep the lead throughout the game.

The Fire are back in action next week, taking on Ave Maria at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
