MONTGOMERY, Ala.— The Southeastern University women's soccer team started their 2020 season with a 3-0 victory over the Faulkner Eagles.
Three second half goals from three separate players and a couple of diving saves by junior goalkeeper
Holly Eddins helped the Fire earn their first win of the year.
The Fire had the Eagles guessing as to where the offense was coming from as eleven different players registered a shot.
"Today was a day filled with emotions. Girls were anxious and excited to get the game under way," said coach Alan Berrios after his first game with Southeastern. "I thought we did a great job managing those emotions and settled in quickly."
Southeastern kept the pressure on the Eagles' defense throughout the contest as they had eleven shots in the first half, and 20 in the second half with twelve of those on goal but didn't convert until midway through the second half.
"We regrouped at half, made some adjustments, and were able to take control of the game once again in the second half," said Berrios.
Victoria Moran, a transfer from Faulkner, got the scoring started for the Fire as she found the back of the net in the midway through the second half against her former team.
SEU capitalized later in the half with back-to-back goals from junior transfer
Jennifer Luna and junior
Summer Rusher. Luna scored off an assist from
Mashell Rodriguez while Rusher converted off an assist from
Sierra Clayton.
Eddins shut the door on the Eagles comeback attempt with three second half saves, including two diving saves in the final five minutes of play.
"Overall, I thought the team played very well," said Berrios. "We still have a long way to go but it was a very good start. It was great to see the team apply what we've been working on for the past couple of weeks."
The Fire (1-0) won't face another opponent until September 14
th when they host an exhibition against the University of Fort Lauderdale at 5:00 pm.
