LAKELAND, Fla.—Southeastern looked like it would pick up where it left off over the weekend with its doubleheader against Calumet.
The Fire took an early lead against the Crimson Wave, but lost the first game 5-2 before coming away with a 1-0 win in Game 2.
A two-out single by
Lauren Watters put the Fire up 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Calumet answered in the next half inning with a two-out RBI single of their own, but the Fire regained the lead with a
Britt Robinson RBI single to left center.
The game turned in the fourth with Calumet getting four runs on four hits to take the lead. Southeastern threatened in the bottom half of the inning, getting runners to second and third with a single to left by
Ramsey Sullivan and a bunt single by
Madison Williams. However, a strikeout, fly out, and pop out ended the inning.
Calumet pitcher Josseline Monge retired the last seven hitters she saw to end the game and earn her fourth win of the year.
Williams finished with two hits as did
Bailee Moll.
In Game 2,
Peyton Varela was outstanding, striking out a season-high nine hitters and allowed just four hits working a complete game shutout. The sophomore did not allow a walk, coaxing nine fly outs and three groundouts.
The lone run came the bottom of the second on a two-out RBI single by Robinson to score
Kaley Sarasty, who led off the inning with a single.
Southeastern looked to put some distance between itself and Calumet, loading the bases with one out after Sarasty won a 13-pitch at bat with a single to left, a bunt single by
Whittney Purdy, and a hit by pitch to Robinson. A pair of fly out ended the threat.
Varela ended the game with a strikeout looking and a strikeout swinging in the top of the seventh.
Sarasty had two hits to lead the offense in the second contest.
The Fire return to action on Friday with a doubleheader against University of the Cumberlands.
