Mulcahy's Gem Lifts Fire Past Night Hawks in TSC Opener

#4 Southeastern Notches Sun Conference Opening Win Over Thomas

THOMASVILLE, Ga.- On a day where junior right-handed pitcher Bryce Mulcahy dazzled on the mound for the Fire, the No. 4 Southeastern University baseball team notched an 8-1 win in their 2020 Sun Conference opener versus the Thomas University Night Hawks at Vernadoe Stadium.

Mulcahy tossed a complete game for SEU, allowing his first and only hit of the contest with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. The St. Helens, Oregon native only walked two and struck out 11 Night Hawks in the performance.

Mulcahy spoke modestly about his outing, stating that "It is a team game. Cristian Martin came out and hit a solo bomb in the first at-bat and we put a lot of runs across early, so I just cruised off of that momentum and kept going."

Junior outfielder Cristian Martin did indeed get the offense moving quickly on the day for the Fire, launching a solo-homer over the left field wall in just the fifth pitch of the ball game to put SEU ahead 1-0.

Later in the top of the first, senior outfielder Zach Cornell buried a triple to left-center to bring Pedro Castellano home and put the Fire up 2-0. Junior shortstop Sam Faith capped off the momentous start by doubling home Cornell and putting Southeastern ahead of Thomas 3-0 after the top of the first frame.

Thomas miscues allowed the Fire to tack on more in the top of the third, as a TU error and a bases-loaded hit by pitch allowed the first two SEU runs to score in the inning.

A fly ball to center off the bat of Martin was deep enough to advance Colton Onstott to home plate and put Southeastern up 6-0 later in the frame.

From the bottom of the first to the bottom of the fifth, Mulcahy retired 11-straight Night Hawks, despite only recording two of his 11 punch outs during that stretch.

The Fire received more offensive support in the top of the eighth after Cornell absolutely demolished a fastball over the right field wall with Castellano on to put SEU ahead of TU 8-0.

The Night Hawks plated their lone run off a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.

"I think we did a really good job on both ends," shared SEU head coach Adrian Dinkel. "We saw a lot of pitches early and Bryce went the distance. This helped us set the tone for the series."

The Fire look to sweep the series versus the Night Hawks in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. Game times are scheduled for 12:00 and 3:00 p.m.
