Women’s Basketball Looks to Clinch Fifth-Straight Sun Conference Title

LAKELAND, Fla.—History could be made this week as the Southeastern University women's basketball team could lock up its fifth-consecutive Sun Conference regular season championship.

They would be the first women's basketball team to win five-straight Sun Conference titles, and would become the first Southeastern program to win five league titles.

Last week, the Fire ran their Sun Conference winning streak to 76 games, defeating Warner at home and Webber International on the road.

Senior center Marlena Schmidt posted a pair of double-doubles; her seventh and eighth of the season which is the third most in The Sun Conference. She had 13 points and 10 rebounds against Warner and 10 points and 10 rebounds at Webber International. Additionally, her 70 blocks this season ranks third nationally.

The Fire haven't lost at home to a Sun Conference team since February 24th, 2015 in the conference quarterfinal by one to Ave Maria. The Last time SEU lost a home regular season game against a conference opponent was on January 18th of 2014 in a four-point game against Ave Maria.

Overall, the Fire have won 63 of their last 65 contests in The Furnace.

Before returning to The Furnace, the Fire will head to West Palm Beach to take on Keiser which has won two of its last three. The Seahawks are 2.5 games out of the conference playoffs at this point with a 5-9 league record.

Keiser is 13th nationally in 3-point shooting, converting 35.4% from beyond the arc. They are also a crisp 75.6% at the free throw line to lead The Sun Conference.

Saturday, the Fire will host Johnson & Wales which is fighting for a first-round bye in the conference tournament. With the Wildcats' loss on Saturday at Coastal Georgia, the Mariners took control of the No. 2 seed.

JWU will be looking to end a two-game slide with a 19-point loss at Webber International on February 1, and a 25-point loss at Coastal Georgia. Over those two games, the Wildcats are shooting 31.1% from the field and have made just 14 of their last 54 3-pointers (25.9%).

Junior Tianna Ayulo is the third-leading scorer in the league at 16.6 points per game and is fifth in the conference in assists per game at 3.38.
