LAKELAND, Fla. - The No.1 ranked Southeastern women's basketball team defeated Florida Memorial Saturday evening, advancing to 21-2 overall on the season.
Within the first three minutes of play, the Fire outscored the Lions 12-3, forcing them to take a timeout. Southeastern finished the quarter with a 28-16 advantage over Florida Memorial.
SEU finished 12 of their 19 field goal attempts, shooting 63.2% in the quarter. From the three-point line, the Fire shot 57.1%.
Defensively, the Fire ended the first 10 minutes of the game with four blocks, all were registered by senior center, Marlena Schmidt.
The second quarter was fairly even between the Fire and Lions, SEU tallied a total of 14 points compared to 11 points by FMU. The Lions were having much of their success from the three-point line as they were shooting 42.9%.
Going into the break, Southeastern led 42-27 over Florida Memorial. SEU finished the half shooting 51.4% in the field and 46.2% from beyond the arc. Sophomore, Reagan Linster led the team with nine points and four steals.
Returning from intermission, within the first minute, Schmidt registered back-to-back blocks, leading SEU's defense with a total of six blocks.
In the third quarter, Southeastern recorded 25 total points, while only allowing FMU to score nine. The Lions finished the quarter with an impressive shot from half court at the buzzer, however heading into the final frame, SEU still remained on top with a 67-36 lead.
The Lions looking to make up some ground in the fourth, outscored the Fire 18-14. After 40 minutes of play, SEU earned a 81-54 victory versus FMU to remain undefeated in conference play.
Five SEU players finished the afternoon with double-digit points: Taylah Simmons (19), Eliza West (14), Linster (13), Haley Howarth (12), and Schmidt (10).
The Aussie-duo, West and Simmons both ended the day with five assists each.
Southeastern will be back in action on Thursday as they host Warner University at 5:30 p.m.
