Box Score WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—The Southeastern University men's basketball team comeback attempt came up short, suffering its first loss of the season in a 72-70 defeat to Keiser.
With the game tied at 70, the Seahawks made two free-throws with one second left in the game to hand the Fire the loss.
Three-point shooting was the main difference in this one as Keiser went 11-33 from beyond the arc while Southeastern went 4-20.
The Fire couldn't overcome their slow start in this one, trailing by as much as 16 points within the first ten minutes of play. Southeastern slowly began to chip into the Seahawks lead with two separate 6-0 runs within the final ten minutes to enter halftime only trailing 34-28.
Isaiah Moody provided the Fire a spark off the bench with strong defense and added five points. Sophomores
Reggie Mesidor and
Riley Minix led SEU in scoring with seven and six points, respectively.
As a team the Fire shot just 27.3% from the field, their lowest shooting percentage in a half this season. They made up for it at the free-throw line, however, as they went 9-13 while Keiser only had six attempts and made five.
Southeastern was slow out of the gate to start the second half as well, falling behind 56-41 within the first eight minutes of the half. The Fire slowly began working its way back the remainder of the game. SEU went on a 9-0 run that was capped off by a three from freshman Deshaun Osbourne to tie the game at 68 with little over two minutes left on the clock.
Minix went to the line and made two free-throws to give the Fire their first lead since it was 2-0 before Keiser's game-winning free-throws.
Southeastern's shooting improved in the second half as they shot at a 61.5% clip.
Individually, Minix led the team in scoring and rebounds with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Mesidor followed in scoring with 14 points while junior
Riley Matticks ended with 12 points.
Off the bench, Osbourne ended with nine points while Moody and
Ralph Diaz each had eight points. Diaz added seven rebounds as well as an assist, one steal, and a block.
The Fire (5-1, 2-1 TSC) will look to get back on track on Saturday when they host St. Thomas at 7:00 pm.
